  • It is mandatory to leash your dog and supervise it in public areas.
  • In addition to leashing, the following breeds must be muzzled in public:
    • Akita
    • Boerboel
    • Bull Terrier
    • Doberman Pinscher
    • Dogo Argentino
    • Fila Brasileiro
    • German Shepherd Dog and related breeds such as the Belgian Shepherd Dog and the East European Shepherd Dog
    • Mastiffs including the Bull Mastiff, Perro De Presa Canario, Cane Corso and Dogue De Bordeaux
    • Neapolitan Mastiff
    • Pit Bull including the American Pit Bull Terrier/American Pit Bull/Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshore Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bulldog and crosses between them and other breeds.
    • Rottweiler
    • Tosa
    • Crosses of the above breeds
  • Each licensed dog must be microchipped with an ISO compliant microchip. The microchip number, which should be lodged with AVA, enables lost pets to be reunited with their owners and is used to establish rightful ownership if your pet is stolen and found.
  • Animal abuse is illegal. Forms of cruelty include:
    • Abandoning your pet
    • Kicking, torturing or ill-treating an animal
    • Neglecting to supply sufficient food and water to your confined pet
